Environmental concerns in Melur taluk in Madurai district have once again intensified following the death of another deer in Kallangadu region. This has bolstered the local demand to the State government to designate the ecologically sensitive landscape as a protected forest area.
On Sunday (August 9, 2026) a deer ventured out of its shrinking natural habitat toward Nagappansivalpatti village in search of water. The exhausted and vulnerable animal was attacked and killed by a pack of stray dogs.
A few months back a deer was struck and killed by an unidentified vehicle on Karungalakudi four-lane highway.
Spanning across Boothamangalam, Kodukkampatti, and Vanchinagaram village panchayats, Kallangadu had long served as a vital sanctuary for a range of animals, including deer, slender loris, monitor lizard, peafowl, mongoose, jungle cat, and various native bird species, said Selvaraj, a resident and an activist.
