THE Philippines appeared to be conducting a resupply mission over the weekend for its military outpost aboard the BRP Sierra Madre at Second Thomas Shoal, according to monitoring by the maritime transparency initiative SeaLight.The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has deployed the 44-meter BRP Malabrigo and the 97-meter BRP Teresa Magbanua in support of the operation, with the latter having previously been the longest-deployed PCG asset in the West Philippine Sea.As usual, the PCG support vessels are being closely shadowed by China Coast Guard (CCG) and maritime militia ships in the disputed waters.The mission comes just weeks after a violent clash on July 20, 2026, near the shoal - known as Ayungin Shoal in the Philippines and Ren'ai Jiao in China - during which Chinese coast guard personnel allegedly boarded Philippine boats and injured a Filipino Navy sailor with a metal rod.
