The Supreme Court of India has urged a balanced approach regarding firecracker restrictions, emphasizing the need to protect both religious sentiments and public health. The court suggested promoting traditional practices like lighting lamps instead of relying solely on bans.
Why it matters
This case highlights the ongoing tension between cultural traditions and environmental/health regulations in urban Indian centers.
The Supreme Court on Monday (October 12, 2026) highlighted the need to balance religious sentiments with public health concerns while considering restrictions on firecrackers in the national capital and neighbouring regions.
“We will not hurt religious sentiments but at the same time, people should themselves come forward and opt for it. The whole exercise should involve a balancing approach,” Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, heading a three-judge Bench, said.
During the hearing, Justice Joymalya Bagchi questioned the religious basis for bursting firecrackers.
