Residents seek drinking water, street lights
Residents of Thirumagal Nagar in Tamil Nadu have petitioned the district administration for basic amenities including drinking water and street lights. The community, which has been established since 2016, reports that the lack of infrastructure poses safety risks and daily hardships.
Why it matters
It highlights the ongoing struggle for basic civic infrastructure in rural Indian localities despite tax compliance.
Residents of Thirumagal Nagar in Nathipalayam panchayat in Gobichettipalayam taluk have submitted a petition to the district administration seeking drinking water supply and street lights in their locality.
The petition, submitted during the grievance redress day meeting on Monday (July 20), said over 50 families, including over 30 school-going children, have been residing in the locality since 2016. However, the panchayat was yet to provide basic amenities such as drinking water supply and street lights. Without streetlights, the residents, including children, faced difficulties commuting after dark, particularly owing to the presence of venomous snakes in the area.
The residents said they paid property tax and other local taxes regularly and without arrears.
