Residents of Karukkalacherry stage road blockade

Residents of Karukkalacherry staged a road blockade to protest the expansion of the Karaikal Fishing Port. They argue the project threatens their livelihoods and have requested the expansion be relocated.
Why it matters
The conflict illustrates the tension between large-scale infrastructure development and the economic interests of local fishing communities.
Residents of Karukkalacherry on Wednesday staged a road blockade in protest against the Karaikal Fishing Port expansion project.
The existing fishing port was built at a cost of ₹47.74 crore in 2012 at the junction of Arasalaru and Mullaiyaru in Karaikal. The Central government has approved the expansion of the fishing port at a cost of ₹130.17 crore. However, the residents of Karukkalacherry have been opposing the expansion scheme, claiming that port activities would disturb their livelihood. They have been insisting that the expansion project should be built 150 metres further north so that it would not affect Karukkalacherry village.
