Rep. Ilhan Omar’s home searched by federal agents in criminal probe - NBC News

Federal agents executed a search warrant at the Washington, D.C. home of Rep. Ilhan Omar as part of an ongoing criminal investigation involving immigration and fraud. Omar has characterized the search as political intimidation, while the Justice Department maintains it is a judicially authorized step in a broader probe.
Why it matters
The investigation into a high-profile member of Congress raises significant questions regarding the intersection of federal law enforcement and political partisanship.
Federal agents searched Rep. Ilhan Omar’s home in Washington, D.C., on Monday morning, according to two people familiar with the investigation. One of the people familiar with the probe said the search is part of a yearslong criminal investigation by Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. attorney in Minneapolis and the Justice Department. The probe, which involves whistleblowers, documents and witness testimony, deals partly with immigration and fraud, but it goes beyond those things, the source said. A Justice Department spokesperson said in a statement that Homeland Security Investigations “executed a judicially authorized search warrant” as “part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.” The statement did not specify that the warrant was related to Omar, D-Minn., or provide further information about the nature of the investigation.
