Removal of seemai karuvelam in Virudhunagar district will begin on Wednesday
The Virudhunagar district administration has launched a campaign to eradicate the invasive Prosopis juliflora species from government lands. Officials are encouraging public participation in the removal process and the subsequent planting of native tree species to restore ecological balance.

Virudhunagar district administration will begin a massive drive against Prosopis juliflora from Government land and Government office premises on Wednesday.
In a statement, Virudhunagar Collector N.O. Sukhaputra said that the drive would be carried out with the coordination of various government departments.
The Collector said that Prosopis juliflora was an invasive species. This uncontrolled proliferation was posing danger to the native species and affecting bio-diversity. Besides reducing the natural fertility of soil, the invasive species was encroaching upon grazing land, farming land, waterbodies and government land. It was thus affecting the ecological balance and posing hurdle for the greening activities.
The district administration has taken up the mass eradication of Prosopis juliflora under the special initiative, ‘Virudhunagar Sezhumai Karuvoolam’.
Prosopis juliflora would be uprooted and trees of native species would be planted, the Collector said.
