Tension prevailed in Ramanathapuram on Monday evening as relatives of a 35-year-old farmer staged a road blockade on the Madurai-Rameswaram Highway, demanding the immediate arrest of those allegedly responsible for his suicide.

The victim, Katheeswaran of Keezhaperungarai village near Parthibanur, was a farmer and charcoal maker.

According to the police, Katheeswaran was allegedly assaulted and sexually harassed at his farm around 10 days ago by a group of local youths who were allegedly under the influence of ganja.

Severely distressed by the ordeal, Katheeswaran attempted suicide at his home four days ago. He was rushed to the emergency ward of the Ramanathapuram Government Medical College Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries without responding to treatment.

Following his death, relatives and family members gathered in front of the hospital and blocked the busy highway, bringing traffic to a halt for an hour.
