Recursive launches Flint, a laptop coding model it says was largely built by AI

AI startup Recursive has released 'Flint,' a coding model designed to run locally on laptops, which was developed largely through the company's own automated research system. The model is open-source and aims to demonstrate the potential for recursive self-improvement in AI development.
Why it matters
The release marks a significant step in 'recursive self-improvement,' where AI systems contribute to their own development, potentially accelerating innovation while raising safety concerns.
Recursive , an AI startup founded last year, is starting to live up to its name. The company, which is trying to build AI that can improve itself, released its first model, Flint , on Wednesday. Flint is a free coding model that can run on a laptop and was built largely with the help of AI.
Recursive’s automated research system, which it calls the Eureka Machine, helped with nearly every step of Flint’s development, the company says. That let a small team build the model from scratch in under four months.
