The Reserve Bank’s senior manager of economics has been appointed to the central bank’s powerful committee tasked with maintaining price stability.
Rebecca Williams will join the Monetary Policy Committee on October 15 – before the next Official Cash Rate (OCR) review on October 28.
Her appointment is only short-term, for a year, because the convention is for governments not to make significant appointments within three months of a general election.
Monetary Policy Committee members are appointed by the finance minister on the recommendation of the Reserve Bank board.
The seven-member committee has been short a member since Adrian Orr’s resignation as governor in March last year.
Finance Minister Nicola Willis said Williams would bring strong institutional knowledge to the committee.
