A coalition of 25 leading technology companies and organisations has published a joint letter titled Open Weights and American AI Leadership recently, is urging policymakers to embrace open-weight AI models. The letter argues that America’s AI leadership depends not on a single frontier model but on building a strong, open ecosystem that diffuses across industries. It highlights how open weights AI models that anyone can download, inspect, and run expand access, spur competition, and give greater control to organisations over their data and capabilities. The letter has also drawn endorsements from the biggest names in technology. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella wrote, “Open-weight models are essential to a healthy AI ecosystem. Together with others across our industry, we are outlining a path for open-weight models to strengthen American competitiveness and expand economic opportunity, while protecting national security,” supporting the letter on X.
