Why it matters
Public statements by government officials regarding religious superiority often trigger political debate and require clarification to maintain secular harmony.
Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayaraddi on Monday sought to clarify his remarks on Islam that he made in Kuknoor of Koppal district on Sunday.
He said that he does not disrespect any religion and treats all faiths equally.
“I have only highlighted the positive values of Islam. I have never intended to suggest that other faiths are any less significant,” he told reporters in Yelburga of the district on Monday.
“I only spoke about the noble ideas in Islam. I did not say that other religions are inferior. I have said that all religions are great. What is wrong in saying that?” Mr. Rayaraddi asked.
He said that he does not belong to any particular religion and that his comments have to be understood in the context in which they have been made.
