Rare Harry Potter first edition, one of 500 hardcovers, sold for $400,000
A rare 1997 hardcover first edition of 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone' sold at a Dallas auction for $400,000. The extraordinary price is driven by the extreme scarcity of the 500-print hardcover run and specific printing errors featured in the text.
Why it matters
The high auction value demonstrates the enduring cultural and financial value of pop-culture collectibles and rare literary editions among modern investors.
When Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was first published in 1997, only 500 hardcover copies were printed. Most were intended for libraries, where children could borrow and read them. Nearly three decades later, one of those early copies fetched $400,000 at auction, helped by its rarity and the printing errors preserved in its pages and cover.According to American auction house Heritage Auctions, the book sold on October 14, 2026, at its Rare Books Signature Auction in Dallas, Texas. The final price of $400,000 included the buyer’s premium. The winning bid before the premium was $320,000, making the book one of the most expensive copies of Rowling’s debut novel to sell at auction.
