A North Canterbury high school is mourning the loss of a “much-loved” teacher who has died after a battle with breast cancer.
In a statement, Rangiora High School said Kathryn Cunningham “was an excellent educator who inspired many students with her love of science and the natural world”.
Cunningham had begun teaching in the school’s science department in 2010 and was also “a proud ex-student” of Rangiora High School.
A Givealittle page set up to support Cunningham and her family said she discovered a lump while breastfeeding her daughter in late 2022.
The page read that a week before Christmas of that year, Cunningham received the diagnosis of Stage 3 breast cancer.
“Throughout 2023, Kathryn fought through intensive treatment, including chemotherapy, surgery and radiation,” the page read.
“Things were looking positive, and she transitioned to hormone blockers with a real sense of hope for the future.”
