Rams’ Winners & Losers: Ty Simpson is bringing the future

Rookie quarterback Ty Simpson impressed in his debut for the Los Angeles Rams, leading the team to a 20-12 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. His performance has sparked debate regarding the team's depth chart and the future of the backup quarterback position.
Why it matters
Preseason performances are critical for evaluating roster depth and future team strategy in professional sports.
Ty Simpson was pinpoint accurate in his debut for the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday, as the first-round pick led his team to a 20-12 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Starter Stetson Bennett got just two drives to open the game before leading to Simpson, a potential glimpse into the future and the rest was history.
But Simpson’s gain was definitely Bennett’s loss.
Presume to be Matthew Stafford’s backup in Week 1, Bennett was so obviously outshined by the rookie that many will loudly question if Sean McVay has the right depth chart. Did Simpson surpass Bennett in only one game? There was definitely one winner and one loser among them.
There is more to come on Simpson, as well as all encouraging and discouraging performances by Rams players that came out of this game. Welcome to the first “Rams winners & losers” of the 2026 season.
