Ramp, stairlift make Napier Museum in Thiruvananthapuram disabled friendly

The Napier Museum in Thiruvananthapuram has installed a new ramp and stairlift to improve accessibility for disabled visitors. The project, funded by museum grants, aims to promote inclusive development at the historic site.
Why it matters
Improving accessibility in public cultural institutions is a key step toward social inclusion for differently-abled citizens.
In an initiative to make the Napier Museum premises in the city disabled friendly, Minister for Museums and Zoo O.J. Janeesh on Wednesday inaugurated a ramp and a stairlift to improve access to the Museum auditorium.
The Museum auditorium is located on the first floor of the building that houses the KCS Panicker Art Gallery.
A number of programmes, including exhibitions, were organised at the Museum auditorium. However, the differently abled were not abled to attend these. At the same time, installing a lift in the gallery building with its limited facilities was not practical. In such a situation, the stairlift facility would make the building disabled friendly. The government’s aim was inclusive development, the Minister said.
