Ramlila Maidan: The ground where protests dealt blows to Congress, twice
Delhi Police has designated Ramlila Maidan as a primary protest site following the removal of Jantar Mantar from the list of approved venues. The ground is historically significant for hosting major anti-government movements, including the 1975 anti-Emergency rally and the 2011 anti-corruption protests.
Why it matters
The relocation of protest sites impacts the visibility and political efficacy of civil movements in India's capital.
NEW DELHI: Delhi has a new map for protest, with Jantar Mantar losing its status as a designated venue for demonstrations on Monday. Delhi Police has named three alternative sites, including Ramlila Maidan in central Delhi, a ground that has witnessed political movements with far-reaching consequences for the Congress. The other two designated venues are Burari Ground in north Delhi and CBD Ground in east Delhi. The move comes amid protests against the Election Commission over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
