Rameswaram authorities clear illegal structures on NH; residents call for extended crackdown
Authorities in Rameswaram have begun clearing illegal structures along National Highways to improve traffic flow for pilgrims. Residents are calling for a more extensive crackdown to address remaining encroachments.
Why it matters
The tension between urban development, infrastructure maintenance, and local commercial interests is a recurring issue in rapidly growing pilgrimage towns.
Authorities have launched an extensive drive to clear encroachments along the National Highways in Rameswaram, even as residents and visitors called for a more comprehensive and uncompromising clearance across all major stretches.
Rameswaram witnesses a massive influx of thousands of pilgrims and tourists daily from across the country.
With commercial structures and temporary extensions steadily encroaching upon key thoroughfares, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the municipal administration jointly initiated a targeted clearance operation.
Prior announcements were made to local traders and the public via public address systems on Tuesday to ensure compliance.
On Wednesday, officials commenced the eviction drive near the Seetha Theertham. Armed with heavy machinery, including cranes, the teams cleared illegal structures and extensions on both sides of the road across prominent localities such as Ramar Theertham North, Middle Street and the Thittakudi junction.
