Rain-related death toll in Andhra Pradesh rises to nine

Four more rain-related deaths were reported on Friday, taking the total count during the heavy rains triggered by the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal in Andhra Pradesh to nine. The death count was five till Thursday night (September 24).

A 60-year-old man, identified as Punem Bhaskar Rao (60), was washed away in a swelling stream near Kannapuram in Buttaigudem mandal of Eluru district late on Thursday night.

The incident occurred when Bhaskar Rao was trying to cross the overflowing stream on his way to his village, said the local residents.

In another incident, one person died and nine more were injured when a fish-laden lorry overturned near Pathuru village in Bhimadole mandal of Eluru district amid heavy rains.

The deceased has been identified as Ranjit Shah (53), a native of West Bengal. The injured were admitted to a government hospital nearby, the Bhimadole police said.
