Quad flags economic coercion, announces $85 million to expand AI access
Quad foreign ministers met in Atlanta to discuss economic coercion and announced $85 million in funding to expand access to 'Super Intelligence' (AI) in the Indo-Pacific. The meeting focused on supply chain security and regional stability, though it notably avoided specific mentions of the South China Sea.
Why it matters
The Quad is positioning itself as a counterweight to China's economic influence while standardizing AI terminology and investment across the Indo-Pacific region.
Targeting China’s military and economic practices in the Indo-Pacific region, Quad foreign ministers expressed grave concerns regarding economic coercion, including through arbitrary export restrictions as well as non-market policies and practices that result in overcapacity to disrupt global supply chain in critical industries. In a meeting in Atlanta, Quad also announced plans to provide more than $ 85 million in technical and financial assistance to expand access to “trusted Super Intelligence SI” (using SI to refer to Artificial Intelligence) across the Indo-Pacific.
