Pumwani Maternity Hospital achieves landmark year with no maternal deaths, over 11,000 safe deliveries Pumwani Maternity Hospital delivered more than 11,000 mothers last year without recording a maternal death, in what health officials say is a major improvement in maternal healthcare at the Nairobi facility. Pumwani Maternity Hospital Chief Executive Officer Dr Catherine Ngugi said the facility recorded zero maternal deaths among women who delivered at the hospital during the year. “We had zero maternal deaths in the facility,” Dr Ngugi said. The hospital also processed 21,456 SHA claims worth approximately Sh411 million, helping the facility provide maternity and other essential services to patients. The achievement comes as Nairobi County continues to invest in expanding public health infrastructure and increasing resources available to public hospitals. Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja said the county has significantly increased funding for health services, with allocations rising from about Sh700 million to Sh2.6 billion.
