Public library visits increased by two million nationwide

Visits to public libraries around Ireland have increased by two million in the last two years.

New figures show that almost 16 million visits were made to Ireland's libraries in 2025, compared with nearly 14 million in 2023.

There has also been a spike in borrowing from libraries, with more than 22.8 million items issued last year.

The new figures come as National Public Libraries Open Day takes place nationwide.

People are being invited to visit their local library during the day to explore what they have to offer.

Many will be hosting events, activities and local promotions.

Dr Stuart Hamilton, Head of Libraries Development with the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA) said it is a chance for people to see what is on.

"Come down and have a look at the stock, understand the books and computing arrangements. There are more and more events and activities every year.
