Proposed S$15,000 COE surcharge too low to deter luxury car buyers, some dealers say

Singapore's Land Transport Authority has proposed a S$15,000 surcharge on Certificates of Entitlement (COE) for luxury vehicles to better distinguish them from mass-market cars. However, some dealers argue the fee is insufficient to deter wealthy buyers of high-end vehicles.
Why it matters
This reflects urban policy challenges in managing vehicle ownership and wealth inequality in high-density cities.
Some prospective buyers of mass-market cars are holding off on purchases as the Land Transport Authority conducts a public consultation on merging COE categories A and B.
