Why it matters
The incident highlights ongoing tensions between public and private transport operators and raises concerns regarding workplace safety for public service employees.
A private bus driver and conductor were arrested by the Tiruppur South police on charges of assaulting a ticket examiner of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) at the Tiruppur Central Bus Stand on Sunday.
The ticket examiner, Muthaiyan, 58, of Edappadi in Salem district, was on duty on a Salem–Tiruppur government bus. After the bus reached the Central Bus Stand, a few passengers from northern States approached him seeking information about buses to Perundurai. Muthaiyan directed them to a Salem-bound government bus, according to the police.
The driver and conductor of a private bus operating on the Tiruppur–Erode route subsequently questioned Muthaiyan about allowing the passengers to board the government bus. An argument followed, during which they allegedly assaulted him.
