Press bodies demand FIR against Delhi police officer over alleged sexual assault
Press organizations in India have demanded that the Delhi Police register an FIR against an ACP for the alleged sexual assault of three women journalists. The groups argue that the police are failing in their legal duty and are exhibiting brutality toward independent media workers.
Why it matters
This highlights ongoing tensions between law enforcement and the press, particularly regarding the rights of independent and digital-first journalists.
The Indian Women’s Press Corps, Press Club of India, Delhi Union of Journalists, Press Association, and Kerala Union of Journalists on Wednesday (October 7, 2026) demanded registration of a case against a Delhi police officer for alleged sexual assault on three women journalists at Jantar Mantar.
“We wish to draw your attention to the fact that no FIR has yet been registered against Shri Vivek Bhagat, ACP, for his alleged sexual assault on three women journalists on October 3 at the protest site. This is a clear violation of the law that holds that the police are duty bound to register an FIR immediately on a complaint,” said the press bodies’ memorandum to Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar.
They also sought an “impartial judicial inquiry” into the charges.
