President Mahama proposes financing scheme to complete unfinished houses

President John Dramani Mahama has proposed a new financing scheme to help homeowners complete unfinished construction projects in Ghana. The plan involves partnering with financial institutions to provide loans for completion, potentially utilizing rent-to-own models to assist with repayment.
Why it matters
This initiative aims to address the widespread issue of abandoned housing projects and alleviate the financial burden of rent on citizens.
President John Dramani Mahama has proposed a financing scheme to help owners of unfinished houses raise the money needed to complete their properties and move into them.
He said the National Housing Fund (NHF), in partnership with financial institutions, should develop a product under which owners of unfinished houses would receive financing to complete the structures and repay the loans after moving into their homes.
The President made the proposal at the maiden National Conference on Housing Finance on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, in Accra. He said the scheme could unlock the money already invested in thousands of unfinished houses while reducing the burden on people who continued to pay rent despite owning properties under construction.
"I travel all over the country, and anytime we are coming to land, and you see the number of unfinished houses all over. It is mind-boggling," President Mahama said.
