Power cuts paralyse Punjab rice mills; Opon. slams AAP over ‘Roshan Punjab’ promise
Punjab's rice milling industry is facing a crisis due to frequent power cuts, preventing the processing of the current Basmati harvest. The industry association and the state government are blaming each other and the central government for the power shortages.

Amid scheduled and unscheduled power cuts in the State, the Punjab Rice Millers and Exporters Association on Saturday (September 12, 2026) said the disruption of electricity supply had left rice millers unable to lift Basmati rice arriving in the market yards, which was leading to chaos both in the market yards and at the rice mills.
In a letter to Punjab’s Secretary Power surrounding the issue, the Association noted that the unschedule power cut were crippling the rice milling and export industry in Punjab, which it said “have created serious crisis and distress among the Basmati growing farmers.”
