PoP idols dominate Vinayaka Chavithi celebrations in Visakhapatnam

Despite awareness campaigns by the district administration, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), NGOs and many private organisations on the environmental hazards posed by Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols, their use remained widespread in the city during Vinayaka Chavithi celebrations this year.
PoP idols were sold freely at several locations across the city, with prices ranging from about ₹100 to several thousand rupees depending on their size and design. Though authorities and environmental groups have been encouraging people to opt for traditional clay idols, many residents continued to prefer PoP idols, citing their attractive appearance, variety of designs and availability.
