A nation's prosperity should be built on the strength of its businesses, industries and entrepreneurs. Wealth should be created through innovation, production and investment - not through access to political office. Politicians are elected to serve the public, not to become the wealthiest members of society because of the positions they hold.
When a country's political elite appear to accumulate greater wealth than the businesses driving the economy, it is reasonable for citizens to ask how that wealth was created. Public confidence depends on the assurance that success is founded on legitimate enterprise rather than the misuse of public office or privileged access to state resources.
Public office is a position of trust. Citizens elect leaders to manage national resources responsibly, formulate policies that encourage investment, create employment and improve public services. They do not entrust them with power for personal enrichment.
