Policeman on night patrol attacked, robbed of gold chain

A police officer on night patrol was severely injured after being attacked by a group of burglars near a temple in Theni district. The assailants stole the officer's gold chain and fled, prompting the formation of a special police team to investigate.

A policeman, Sasikumar, 40, attached to Thenkarai police station in Periyakulam in Theni district sustained serious injuries after he was attacked by unidentified persons with weapons including iron rods.
The police said, Sasikumar was on night patrol near Kailasanathar Hill Temple in Kailasapatti near Periyakulam. He spotted two individuals standing near the temple in a suspicious manner. On noticing tools like crowbar in their possession, he questioned them. It was revealed that the duo had come there to commit burglary.
As Sasikumar who called for backup was waiting to arrest them, three other individuals who had been hiding in the dark attacked him from behind. They struck him on the head with weapons, including iron rods.
