Police seek ‘heavy station’ upgrade for Coimbatore city cybercrime unit
The Tamil Nadu Police Department has requested the state government to upgrade the Coimbatore city cybercrime unit to a 'heavy station' status. This change would increase personnel strength to 80 to better handle the significant surge in financial cybercrime complaints.

Heavy influx of complaints and lack of adequate personnel for investigations have forced the Tamil Nadu Police Department to request the State government to upgrade several cybercrime stations as ‘heavy stations’.
Commissioner of Police N. Kannan said the Coimbatore city cybercrime station is among the stations that have been sought to be upgraded to ‘heavy stations’. He said that a heavy police station will have a strength of 80 personnel.
According to the police, the city cybercrime station currently has one Inspector and 10 personnel, whereas even police stations in the ‘light’ category have a sanctioned strength of 30 personnel. The sanctioned strength is 50 for a station in the ‘medium’ category.
