Police release photos after copper theft disrupts Wellington rail

Wellington police are seeking public assistance to identify a person and a vehicle involved in the theft of copper railway signal cables. The incident caused significant disruptions to rail services in the region last week.

An alleged copper theft caused multiple signal issues and disrupted rail services last week in the Wellington region. The incident occurred between 6am and 7am on Friday, July 3. Police said railway signal cables were tampered with at the southern end of the Takapu Road platform in Tawa. Today, police released images of a person who may be able to provide information about the incident. They were also seeking details about a dark coloured ute that was seen in the area around the time the incident was reported. Anybody who had witnessed any suspicious activity, or saw either the person or vehicle pictured was encouraged to contact police via 105. Information could also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers. 1News has approached Metlink for further comment.
