Police modernisation scheme awaits Finance Ministry’s nod, Centre tells SC

The Union government informed the Supreme Court on Wednesday (August 5, 2026) that a proposal seeking in-principle approval for an umbrella scheme for the modernisation of police forces across the country had been sent to the Department of Expenditure under the Union Ministry of Finance.
Additional Solicitor General Rajkumar Bhaskar Thakare, appearing for the Centre, told a Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta that the proposal was forwarded on July 8, 2026 and was currently under consideration.
“The proposal has also been sent on July 8, 2026 to the Department of Expenditure in the Ministry of Finance for in-principle approval of an umbrella scheme for the police modernisation mission. It is under consideration,” Mr. Thakare submitted.
