Police get more time to quiz suspects in alleged plot against Jewish community

Detectives have been granted an extra week to question two men arrested as part of an investigation into an alleged plot to target the Jewish community in Manchester.

The extension means the men - both in the 30s - can now be detained until 4 October.

The men were arrested in the Northern Quarter area of Manchester on 20 September - the eve of Yom Kippur, when thousands of British Jews were in synagogues.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police, which is leading the investigation, said their work was "ongoing and officers continue to pursue a number of lines of enquiry".

The two men were detained on suspicion of offences under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000, the force said on Tuesday.
