Poland and Ukraine slam Russian strike on train near western diplomats as 'escalation'
A Russian drone strike hit a train near the Poland-Ukraine border, narrowly missing a diplomatic train carrying Boris Johnson and other officials. Both Polish and Ukrainian authorities have condemned the incident as a dangerous escalation.
Why it matters
The incident highlights the ongoing risks to high-level diplomatic travel in the region and the potential for accidental or targeted escalation in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
A UKRAINIAN RAIL operator has said it is “entirely plausible” that the drone which hit a train near former UK prime minister Boris Johnson and other officials could have been targeting the diplomatic train.
Ukraine’s rail operator said Johnson and former US CIA director David Petraeus, who were in Kyiv for the annual Yalta European Strategy forum, were travelling on two separate trains when a train bound for Warsaw was hit by a Russian drone.
Poland and Ukraine have subsequently denounced the strikes that hit the train near the Poland-Ukraine border as an “escalation”.
In a statement, rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia said: “The jet drone that attacked the locomotive on the border of Ukraine and Poland was detected by the dispatcher of the Central Monitoring Group, and the evacuation signal from the train was given literally 15 minutes before the hit on the locomotive.
