Poison on the streets

The Botswana Agro Suppliers Association has raised alarms regarding the unregulated sale of pesticides on the streets, which is linked to health risks and environmental damage. The association is calling for government intervention to update outdated regulations and improve the traceability of agrochemicals.
Why it matters
Unregulated chemical sales pose a direct threat to public health, food safety, and animal welfare in Botswana.
Botswana Agro Suppliers Association (BASA) Chairperson Pius Malikongwa has expressed concern over the high rate of pesticide poisoning in the country.
Speaking at the recent National Lands Agric Expo, Malikongwa said there is widespread irregularity in the agrochemicals space, making it difficult to trace some of these chemicals which are used locally.
