Why it matters
This result marks a significant achievement in professional horse racing, highlighting the dominance of the Maher stable.
Point Of Law won the Melbourne Gold Cup as Australian trainer Ciaron Maher saddled the first three home.
Sons And Lovers was the first of Joseph O'Brien’s five-strong contingent to finish, coming home in fourth place.
James J Braddock finished back in seventh place, as Maher claimed the other five slots in the top seven,
Having claimed the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket in July for John and Thady Gosden in the colours of the King and Queen, Point Of Law was bought privately by Wathnan Racing.
In winning the Geelong Cup on his first start for Maher, he was immediately promoted to favouritism and came in at 11/2 with Ethan Brown on board.
