Why it matters
This summit represents a significant shift in Canadian economic policy and international outreach, signaling a push for increased foreign direct investment.
TORONTO — Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada has an unprecedented opportunity to build up the economy as global investors descend in Toronto for a high-stakes summit, and teased that a number of deals have already been signed. Hundreds of executives and global asset managers are arriving in Toronto for Canada’s first-ever investment summit to get a look at major projects in various stages of development. Speaking Sunday evening at the Royal Ontario Museum, Carney told Canadian business leaders and politicians that the world is looking at Canada different, and that Canada should do the same. “We have what the world wants: the energy, the resources, the talent, the technology and the capital,” Carney said. “And our greatest strength is something that cannot be found on any balance sheet: trust,” he said, in an apparent jab at U.S. President Donald Trump.
