Plea to widen Tiruchi-Karur highway
Karur MP S. Jothimani has requested that the Indian government prioritize the widening of the existing Tiruchi-Karur highway. While she acknowledges the planned greenfield highway project, she argues that the current road requires immediate expansion to handle high traffic volumes.

While the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated the process of preparing the detailed project report (DPR) for a greenfield highway between Tiruchi and Karur, the Karur MP S. Jothimani has urged the Centre to widen the existing highway between the two cities.
In a representation submitted to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi recently, Ms. Jothimani, while thanking the Minister for considering the proposal to build a greenfield highway, however, pointed out the project may take a few years to complete.
“This is a much-needed project to strengthen connectivity and address the growing traffic requirements of the region. However, the greenfield project will necessarily take a few years to complete. In the interim, the existing Tiruchi-Karur Road is carrying a very high volume of passenger, public transport and goods traffic, and its present two-way configuration is increasingly inadequate,” she said.
