The Political Killings Task Team has arrested a mayor, a municipal manager, and a chief financial officer of a Western Cape municipality in connection with alleged corruption involving a security contract.

Police said the alleged corruption involved a security contract with a municipality on the province’s southern coast.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe added that the arrests followed information that kickbacks were being demanded from a businessman who had been awarded the security contract in exchange for keeping it.

“It’s alleged that the businessman had already paid hundreds of thousands of rand out of fear that his security services contract would be terminated,” Mathe said.
