Pipers put it across Masters, remain in joint lead
Magnus Carlsen led the Alpine APL Pipers to a victory against the Cheq Mumba Masters in the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League. The win keeps the Pipers in a joint lead alongside the Fyers American Gambits and Ganges Grandmasters.
Why it matters
The Global Chess League represents a significant shift in professional chess toward a team-based, franchise-style format, increasing the sport's commercial appeal.
The Bangalore Golf Club is just across the road. That suits Magnus Carlsen fine. He could come to Lalit Ashok, the venue of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League, after his golfing stint at the course.
He spent quite a few hours there on Wednesday, longer than usual, apparently. The fresh air and the green fields seemed to have helped, as he came up with a fine win against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.
It was the World No. 1’s second win in the tournament, though he may not have enjoyed his first as much; in the game against Viswanathan Anand, he emerged victorious only because his old World championship rival ran out of time when the position was equal.
Carlsen needed no such help from the clock against Vachier-Lagrave.
