The Department of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Microvascular Surgery at Pinnacle Hospitals in Visakhapatnam has reached a clinical milestone by performing multiple complex finger replantations on three children within the past year.
Finger replantation is a highly intricate procedure, requiring the reconnection of bones, nerves, and blood vessels often measuring less than one millimetre in diameter.
Performing this on paediatric patients is exceptionally challenging, demanding high-magnification microscopy and specialised ultrafine instruments.
Dr. Siddhartha Talabhaktula, Senior Consultant Plastic Surgeon, noted that while adult trauma cases are routinely managed, performing three successful paediatric replantations in a 12-month span is unprecedented for the institution.
The success of these surgeries was attributed to seamless multidisciplinary coordination between the emergency, anaesthesia, and microsurgical teams.
