Why it matters
The incident highlights the ongoing political tensions regarding ideological influence and academic freedom in Indian universities.
Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan has strongly condemned the Kerala Police’s decision to provide protection for an alleged Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) programme at the Central University of Kerala in Kasaragod on Tuesday (October 6, 2026).
In a Facebook post, Mr. Vijayan accused the Congres-led government of backing the national seminar on ‘Vande Mataram,’ despite protests from almost all student organisations other than those affiliated with the Sangh Parivar.
He alleged that the United Democratic Front (UDF) government’s cooperation with the “Sangh Parivar conspiracy” to saffronise higher educational institutions and implement communal agendas on campuses had become a regular occurrence in the State.
