PGS certification can help turmeric growers fetch better prices in Erode: Collector
Erode district Collector S. Kandasamy is encouraging local turmeric farmers to adopt Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) certification to access organic markets. He noted that while Erode is a major turmeric producer, only a small fraction of the crop is currently certified organic, which could fetch higher prices for farmers.

Inaugurating a seminar on PGS certification for turmeric cultivation, Mr. Kandasamy said turmeric was one of the major crops grown in Erode district. It was cultivated on about 11,860 acres, accounting for nearly 30% of the State’s total turmeric production. The PSR-2 and Erode Local varieties had obtained Geographical Indication tags. However, certified organic and environment-friendly turmeric was estimated to be cultivated on only 600 to 950 acres in the district.
