Peter Cullen, the Canadian voice actor best known for portraying Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise, has died at the age of 85. Cullen died on August 26 at his home in Los Angeles, with his agent Kevin Motley confirming his death. His family said he passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. A cause of death has not been disclosed.
Cullen first voiced Optimus Prime in the original Transformers animated series in 1984, establishing the deep, authoritative baritone that became inseparable from the Autobot leader. He reprised the role in The Transformers: The Movie in 1986 and continued voicing Prime across animated projects and video games before returning for Michael Bay’s live-action Transformers franchise in 2007. His most recent live-action appearance as the character came in 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts .
