Perimeter fencing of 17 abandoned government quarries under active consideration of Tiruppur administration

A proposal for fencing of 17 abandoned government quarries in Tiruppur at an estimated cost of ₹1.83 crore, to be sourced from the Green Fund, is under active consideration of the district administration, to avert any accidental falls or public safety hazards.

The project proposal for perimeter fencing, under the Tamil Nadu Minor Mineral and Concession Rules, 1959, that provides for reclamation, restoration and rehabilitation of abandoned quarries, was forwarded to the State government through the Commissioner of Geology and Mining on March 5, 2025.

According to official data, the ₹12.98-crore Green Fund mobilised by the district administration has remained unutilised so far.

A comprehensive census identified 19 government poromboke abandoned quarries during 2021. The then Director of Geology and Mining, through a proceeding, formally handed over all these abandoned quarries to the Assistant Director of Town and Village Panchayats and the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board.
