I left India in 1985, and I returned more than two decades later, only because I was coming back to Chennai — if it had been any other city, I don’t think I would have come back!
Work-wise, Chennai was an advantage when it came to developing the liver transplant programme. Work apart, Chennai offers delights in terms of Tamil literature and Carnatic music, both of which I am passionate about. My father would always recite Tamil poetry to us, and I could memorise and recite it too, something I continue to do to this day. I was at the hostel in Kalakshetra, so music and dance are part of what I grew up with.
