The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) drove away a Chinese maritime militia vessel and 24 small boats after they were spotted fishing within the territorial sea of Kota (Loaita) Island in the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG) on Sept. 28.
The CMMV 9622 had deployed the 24 boats, each carrying two people, which spread out and were observed fishing within 300 yards of the island. A five-man PCG team challenged the vessels and the Chinese boats withdrew.
PCG spokesperson Rear Adm. Jay Tarriela said the deployment of the small boats extended the militia vessel's reach and reinforced Chinese presence in the area. The PCG said it would continue monitoring and driving away foreign vessels operating illegally in Philippine waters.
