Passenger vehicle sales soar 36.5% in August 2026, reports SIAM

India's automobile sector saw record-breaking sales in August 2026, with passenger vehicles growing by 36.5%. Industry experts attribute this surge to a low base effect from the previous year and strong consumer confidence.
Why it matters
The growth in the automotive sector serves as a key indicator of consumer spending power and economic health in India.
Automobile wholesales encompassing passenger vehicles (PVs), three-wheelers (3Ws) and two-wheelers (2Ws) recorded the highest-ever numbers of August in 2026, supported by a lower base in the year ago period.
As per data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) in August 2026, the passenger vehicles segment posted sales of 4,39,309 units, reflecting a double-digit growth of 36.5%. Three-wheeler sales during the month recorded 93,764 units, marking a growth of 22.8%, while two-wheeler sales reached 20,34,698 units, showing a growth of 10.5% compared to the same period last year.
“India’s automobile industry is passing through a robust growth phase. The growth in August 2026 has been supported by a lower base from the previous year,” said Rajesh Menon, Director General, SIAM.
