A PASSENGER ferry carrying 90 passengers and five crew members capsized near Long Island in Lake Kariba on Tuesday afternoon, triggering a major search and rescue operation amid reports that several people may have died.
The vessel, identified as the RIDA Mbuyanehanda Ferry, overturned as emergency teams raced to the scene to rescue passengers who were thrown into the water.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the incident.
“The ZRP reports that a DDF boat with 90 people and five crew members has capsized in Lake Kariba. Rescue efforts are currently underway with more details on the situation to be released in due course,” a police update said.
